Where does amethyst come from?

Amethyst grows as a big geode (a kind of round stone). When you open an amethyst geode, you see the beautiful purple sparkles.
A geode is formed when a gas bubble is trapped in magma. Through various natural processes (which can take millions of years!) and the hot temperature cooling, crystals form in the gas bubble which then turns into stone. Many types of crystals and gemstones are formed this way. Super interesting that you are carrying something that can be millions of years old!

Amethyst is mined in almost all over the world; common deposits are Brazil, Madagascar, Zambia, Uruguay, India, Canada, Mexico, Namibia, Russia, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

History

Amethyst comes from the Greek amethustos and means "not drunk". In ancient times amethyst was used in an amulet to keep drunken people away, but also to not get drunk yourself. This way, one could drink a few wines without unpleasant consequences (whether this really worked we will leave aside for now). There are also carafes (drinking bottles) made of amethyst, from which people drank wine. The amethyst was associated with the purple color of wine and with wine gods. Amethyst was used as a protection in many different cultures, including the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. Graves have been found of medieval knights who carried an amethyst to protect themselves during wars.
